Holding Space for Diverse Communities

Saturday, April 5th 12:30PM - 5:30PM

In collaboration with BeWell In School and Dr. JPop

The practice of yoga can make a meaningful difference in the well-being of our communities. Yoga and mindfulness are deeply transformational practices and should be widely shared beyond the yoga-studio setting because studios are not always accessible to the populations who need yoga the most. This workshop is designed for yoga teachers, educators, therapists, and others who want to share yoga and mindfulness practices beyond the studio setting.

In community-based yoga, there aren’t always pristine floors, deluxe sound systems or prop walls full of blankets, blocks and bolsters. Community-based wellness classes often take place in libraries, school classrooms, conference rooms, parks, and shared programming spaces. This workshop will inspire and prepare you in making yoga more effective and more available to under-served and specialized populations. It was designed for those who believe yoga classes should be accessible, culturally competent, welcoming, and enjoyable for ALL bodies, ALL backgrounds and ALL styles of learning.

What you will learn

  1. Understand the factors that impact equity and diversity in wellness and become familiar with specific ways to mindfully and proactively address these factors.

  2. Consider the feeling of being out-of-place or vulnerable and how the nervous system responds to such feelings.

  3. Develop classes, tools, and techniques that are accessible and inspiring that promote healing, increase capacity, and build resilience.

  4. Experience and enjoy a short practice led by an experienced teacher to better understand how these techniques are effectively deployed.
